Each of our read-aloud programs gets community volunteers into classrooms to read to children during their school day. The programs allow area residents, students, and school staff to build strong new friendships as well as achieve literacy goals.

VOLUNTEERING - how does it work?

  • Volunteers sign up for a weekly day and time that works with their schedule, reading aloud to the same small group of students each week for thirty minutes.

  • We provide an orientation session for new volunteers to help you have successful and enjoyable reading session with your students.

  • All volunteers complete a school background check.

READING ALOUD - why does it matter?

  • Develops new vocabulary - children acquire new language by listening.

  • Improves reading comprehension - encourages children to listen and pay attention.

  • Supports English Language Learners and students with reading disabilities.

  • Promotes a love of reading as volunteers share their enthusiasm for books.

  • Develops social and interpersonal skills through positive interactions with caring community members
